# Cleaning the Wired Ambient Probe

The Wired Ambient Probe is built to live next to the grate during long cooks, so it picks up smoke residue, grease splatter, and the occasional drip. Cleaning it takes about a minute.

## After every cook

1. **Unplug it from the WiFi Hub** before cleaning. The cable connector is the one part you don't want wet.
2. **Wipe the stainless probe tip** with a damp cloth or a kitchen sponge. Warm soapy water is fine. For baked-on residue, soak just the metal tip for a few minutes — never the cable or the connector.
3. **Wipe down the cable** with a damp cloth. Don't submerge it.
4. **Dry the probe tip thoroughly** before putting it away.

## What to avoid

| Don't | Why |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Run the cable or connector through the dishwasher | The connector is not sealed against pressurized water — it'll fail |
| Soak the full probe in water | Same reason — water can wick into the connector |
| Use steel wool or abrasive scrubbers on the probe tip | The stainless surface is the temperature-sensing surface; scratches dull readings over time |
| Bend the cable sharply or wrap it tight around itself for storage | Repeated sharp bends can fatigue the wires inside |

## Storage

Coil the cable loosely — a circle about the size of a dinner plate is fine. Keep the probe out of direct sun and away from sources of high heat between cooks.

## Replacing the probe

The Wired Ambient Probe is designed to last for years of regular use. If yours ever needs replacing — bent beyond repair, cable damaged, readings drifting after cleaning — [fill out a ticket in the app](https://tms.fyi/help) and our Support Team will help.
